Installing and Upgrading to the Canonical Version of Gravity PDF

Disclaimer: Gravity PDF is a third-party add-on for the popular form-builder plugin Gravity Forms. The PDF plugin is developed by Blue Liquid Designs – an independent Australian business.

After 12 years publishing the free and open-source Gravity PDF plugin solely on WordPress.org, we’ve decided to host the canonical (primary) version of the plugin directly on GravityPDF.com. The canonical release includes an alternative update mechanism that allows you to receive new features, security updates, and bug fixes directly from our website.

How to Upgrade Gravity PDF

In order to switch from the WordPress.org-hosted version to the canonical release please follow these steps:

  1. Download the latest zip of the plugin
  2. Log in to your site
  3. Navigate to Plugins > Add New Plugin > Upload Plugin in the admin area
  4. Upload the zip file
  5. Activate the plugin
  6. Delete the non-canonical plugin

All existing PDF settings, custom templates, and fonts are preserved when you switch to the canonical release.

Use Composer

An alternative installation/upgrade option for developers is to use Composer from the CLI. Both the canonical release and all Extensions can be managed with Composer.

Use WP CLI

If you prefer using the WP-CLI to manage your WordPress site, you can use these two commands to complete the upgrade:

					wp plugin install https://gravitypdf.com/download-gravity-pdf --activate
wp plugin delete gravity-forms-pdf-extended

How to Install Gravity PDF

If this is your first time installing Gravity PDF on a site you should follow these steps:

  1. Download the latest zip of the plugin
  2. Log in to your site
  3. Navigate to Plugins > Add New Plugin > Upload Plugin in the admin area
  4. Upload the zip file
  5. Activate the plugin

Extensions and Templates

Updates for premium Gravity PDF extensions and/or templates are not affected by this change, and you will continue receiving extension/template releases directly from GravityPDF.com.

Because extensions/templates enhance the core Gravity PDF plugin, it is recommended you complete the canonical release upgrade on your website (see above).

Plugin Slug and Text Domain

The canonical Gravity PDF plugin uses gravity-pdf for the plugin slug and text domain, departing from gravity-forms-pdf-extended used on WordPress.org. If you have created custom translations for Gravity PDF, or have custom code that relies on these values, you will need to adjust the slug/text domain to match.

Help and Support

We have put together a FAQ page about the canonical release. If you have any other questions or need assistance making the switch, please reach out to our friendly support team. We are more than happy to help you make a smooth transition to the canonical Gravity PDF release.

Plugin Reviews

In the last 12 years Gravity PDF has received 317 reviews on WordPress.org, and we’re proud of our 4.9 out of 5 star average we have maintained. But your independent voice is important and so we’ve made G2.com the new home for users to write plugin reviews of the software. If you have a moment, we’d love for you to add your voice and leave a review.
